The Lost Witch by Melvin Burgess
This book is perhaps one of the most surprising books I have ever read. I picked it up thinking it would be just another fantasy style book but boy, was I wrong!
The first chapter has you gripped from the very beginning and is probably one of the most dynamic first chapters I have ever read. Some call this book a thriller, but to me it is more magical realism. The strange happenings in the book have you wondering if this is magical or if there is something more sinister going on, and a lot of the themes touched on and hinted at included kidnapping, abuse and even rape. It’s a book that makes you feel uncomfortable and enchanted all at the same time, which is an odd feeling that I haven’t experienced before.
It kept me guessing and wondering at every twist and turn. The only downside was that it seemed to end abruptly and I was left wondering what had happened, frantically looking through the book to see if there weren’t some hidden chapters! However, having said that, the ending suited the book and left me wanting more, which I guess is what a good book should do.
