We are not signalling impending doom for the book Industry
I recently read an article in The Guardian on whether social media is influencing book cover design, but it wasn’t the actual article I had a problem with. It was some of the comments.
Many were calling people who buy books because they have a nice cover “f***ing millennials” or “tasteless hipsters” and complaining about how the world is going downhill because of people who ‘cover buy’.
The first thing I would like to say is… GET A GRIP. There are more important things to be complaining about on the internet than whether people buy books because they look pretty or not. At the end of the day, the author is still getting money even if the book is never read, so I’m failing to see the problem here.
Secondly, I hate to break it to you, but this is how marketing works now. Those clever enough to know the world called ‘Bookstagram’ (where the hashtag has over 23 million posts in it) will know that it’s a marketing goldmine. If you want your book to sell, you have to get it in with the Bookstagrammers, and that means making your cover look nice. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’d want all of my books to have nice covers anyway, but even if I didn’t, I’d do whatever I could to make that book sell. All of my recommended reads I get from seeing Bookstagram photos. If I see a cover that I like the look of, I’ll look it up on Amazon and, if I like the sound of it, I’ll buy it.
The fact of the matter is, Bookstagram and Bookstagrammers make books sell and create new readers. We have made books trendy again and enlivened an industry people thoughts was on the way out. But apparently we are “losers”.
Now you can come at me with the whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” malarkey and, arguably, this is true. But it also isn’t. The cover is the first thing that draws people to a book because that’s all that they will see. In a bookshop, you’re going to go and pick up the book that you like the LOOK of. Then you read what the book is about and if you like the sound of it, you buy it, and if you don’t, you put it back. But one thing is for sure, If I don’t like the cover of the book, there is no way I’m going anywhere near it because it hasn’t appealed to me.
So you can continue shouting about how millennials are destroying the world how everyone is now doomed, but that won’t stop the facts from being facts. If you want your book to sell, you have to appeal to the audience with a good cover. End of story.
